CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
DanceTech by Hillary Class Descriptions
Ballet: The study of ballet and ballet technique is the base of all dance training. Correct posture along with arm, leg and body positioning are emphasized. Students also learn the correct ballet terminology. These principles are offered to all age groups. Tap: The study of tap introduces the student to musicality, rhythm, and time coordination. Correct terminology is introduced to all age groups. Several different styles of tap are covered.
Jazz: The study of jazz dance is perhaps the most contemporary and therefore the most recognized form of dance. This dance form, along with modern music, is the base of popular dance and drill team preparation. Emphasis on different jazz styles and individual creativity are emphasized.
Modern/Lyrical: Modern is the abstract dance form. Modern is a combination of ballet and jazz styles with emphasis on strength and conditioning. Lyrical is perhaps the most beautiful of all dance disciplines, combining the form and grace of ballet with musical interpretation. Both styles will be combined in this class.
Pointe: Pointe is the advanced study of ballet and ballet technique for the more advanced and mature dancer. Proper ankle strength and balance are necessary for execution of this dance form. Previous ballet training and present enrollment in a regular ballet class will be required.
Acrobatics: The study of acrobatics promotes good muscle tone, balance and strength. Unlike gymnastics, acrobatics incorporates more of a musical or lyrical presentation. Safe execution of beginning tumbling moves progresses to a more controlled presentation. Students progress to more difficulty as appropriate.
Hip Hop: This modern, energetic dance form offers the student education in isolation and movements unlike any other discipline. Hip Hop is a wide combination of jazz-like movement incorporated with street-savvy tricks. Many styles of this dance genre are incorporated in fun, rhythm-oriented movement.
Drill Team Prep: This class focuses on preparing the dancer for drill team tryouts. The emphasis is on flexibility, precision, kicking, and basic marching drill team terminology. Techniques for learning dance combinations at a fast pace are employed. Good field performance presence is explained. (This class does not participate in the recital.)
Individual and Solo Classes: We will also be offering special one-on-one solo classes which can be used to advance a dancer’s knowledge and education in any dance discipline. These classes can be used for choreography for those students who will be participating in dance competitions, or for students who need help with a particular dance discipline at any level. There will be limited solo time slots available, and these will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
